There has never been a time when data has been more important. We use it to make sense of the world around us and to make better decisions in our personal lives, as well as in the boardroom.

If you’re not entirely confident with using, analyzing and reporting on data, it can have a negative impact on your ability to successfully complete your role as a Board Member.

In this course, arranged over two 3-hour sessions on consecutive days, you will learn how to make sense of the data presented to the board; the insights you can find, the limitations you’ll run into - and, perhaps most importantly, how to spot the common data fallacies that risk leading you down the wrong path. This course is a must for those seeking the clarity and confidence to harness the power of data at board level.

Mike Weston

Throughout his career, Mike has found that a grasp of data is a superpower for professional success. So much so that in 2012, he created one of the world’s first data science consultancies to help clients make better decisions about how to run their organizations. Today, he sits on the boards of 3 technology companies and one voluntary organization. He also teaches and mentors on a master’s diploma in Digital Transformation for OpenClassrooms and Stanford. An experienced course facilitator, Mike has created and delivered programs for Actuate on Fundamentals of Digital Transformation and Navigating Uncertainty, receiving amazing feedback from participants. He is the author of a book, Reimagine, which is scheduled for publication early in 2022 outlining his Five Forces of transformation, one of which of course, is data.

Module 1

  • Basic data literacy: learning to critically assess data that is presented to you
  • Reporting vs insight vs strategy: recognise how to convert dry data reporting into meaningful recommendations for action
  • Understanding the biases and noise within data and the impact that they can have on the decisions that are being made

Module 2

  • Identify the 12 common ‘fallacies’ of data analysis
  • Get to grips with the ethical and legal implications of how data is collected, stored and analyzed within the business - including the legal responsibilities of directors

Learning outcomes

As a board member, you need to have total oversight of data to help inform and guide your strategic decision making. Over these two sessions, you’ll learn how to read data reports, how to ask the right questions and how to turn a sea of numbers, graphs and charts into insight and strategy. The goal isn’t to turn you into a data scientist, but to allow you to understand what is being said when they present their work. This will give you the information you need to make crucial decisions in the boardroom and the tools necessary to make your own data-driven decisions with discernment and intellectually guided judgment. This will significantly boost the value you deliver in the boardroom - and in your everyday life as well.
